📌What is Title IX?

Title IX is about prevention, education, and advocacy. Title IX is federal civil rights legislation that prohibits gender discrimination and sexual harassment in educational settings. We are all mandated reporters. As mandated reporters, if we become aware of instances of sexual, gender-based harassment, discrimination or sexual misconduct (including but not limited to intimate partner violence, stalking, including cyberstalking, sexual assault, sexual misconduct, sexual exploitation, or retaliation, we should contact our campus Title IX Office.

Zoom-bombing

Do you remember reports of "Zoom-bombing" early in the pandemic?

The combination of a massive number of new users combined with Zoom's limited privacy features turned into opportunities for bad actors to become uninvited participants. Incidents of sexual imagery, racist language, and unwanted annotation of slides led to a quick release of additional Zoom security features.

What to do if it happens to you

First, remove all instances of Zoom links posted in your Canvas course pages or other web pages. Assume those links are compromised.
If you are using the Canvas Zoom LTI located in the course menu, that's fine. Go directly to your ConferZoom portal to verify security settings, then go to the Canvas Zoom LTI link in your course menu and create just the next meeting for your students.
Communicate with your students how this made you feel. If you suspect someone in your class enabled a non-student to join, what may have seemed like a funny prank will most likely be replaced by regret. Remind them it's a stressful time for everyone. Name the behavior, and use it as an opportunity to encourage everyone to demonstrate compassion, and going forward, your Zoom environment must be a safe space for all. Your students will relate to your vulnerability and support you.

Sign in to the ConferZoom portal and make the following changes. Understand, trust was violated and it may take a little time for you to feel safe again. Let students know, "I'm here for you!"

For your safety and privacy, do not create a recurring meeting now. Canvas Zoom LTI meeting scheduling.
Avoid using your Personal Meeting ID for your live class sessions. Your Personal Meeting ID is a permanent meeting identifier that is associated with your Zoom account. If it is breached by an unwelcome guest, it will be breached forever.
Use a Waiting Room to screen who is allowed to come into the meeting room.
Require users to log in with a password.
You can disable custom backgrounds that allow users to show images as a backdrop.
Mute participants upon entry. Let students know your policies early on in the class; if they become disruptive, they can be removed from the session.
Turn off file transfers.
Disable private chat if needed.
Start a Zoom practice session with someone you trust and test your in-meeting security options.

Recommended Zoom Privacy Settings

In your Zoom account, select these settings to produce recordings that only show the active speaker and to not display student names.

Click on Settings
Select the Recording tab
Under Cloud Recording:

Select Record active speaker and shared screen
Deselect Record gallery view with shared screen
Deselect Record active speaker, gallery view and shared screen separately
Deselect Display participants' names in the recording
