LIB 100: Critical Approaches to Information Research

#2756 - Spring 2022

Video Transcript

Access to information is critical and libraries provide access. GCC Library is more than just books, it is a place where you can find many types of information. Library resources are seemingly infinite, come in wide range of formats and isn't censored. Libraries create a space for communities where everyone is welcome. LIB 100 will highlight why they are essential to scholarship. When Anthony Marx, CEO of New York Public Library states, “The library is quietly one of the places saving democracy.” (Link Links to an external site.), he highlights the importance of the broad range of library resources. Learning how to use them in an academic setting provides an opportunity to develop a superpower.

Our class is designed to understand the importance of keeping an open mind. You can’t write an academic paper if you go in thinking you just need to find information to reinforce your argument. This is confirmation bias. We will learn about it and how it can hamper our ability to produce excellent research papers. This class will develop your academic research skills, providing a foundation you will build upon both in school and your profession.

Every day, we are bombarded with information. Thankfully, most of it is noise. If we had to absorb it all, we’d be quickly overloaded information. The issue becomes how do you determine is something is good resource? We will learn how to seek reliable information. Research doesn’t run in a straight line. You will learn how to navigate through the noise to locate trustworthy information.

We will start exploring, with an eye toward understanding the depth of our research landscape, ending ultimately, with an understanding of the tools and steps needed to develop reliable and well reasoned arguments.

If you're having any problems, let me know. You can email me through Canvas by clicking on  the InBox icon on the gray left-hand column. I will respond within 24 hours M-F and 48 hours on Saturday/Sunday. If you don't hear back from me, please resend it.
