Every day, we listen to other voices and receive a constant flow of information in different formats. These can include watching interviews, listening to news reporting, sitting through staff meetings. It represents just a few examples of the oral transmission of information. Sometimes we pause to consider what we hear and read non-verbal cues (body language). It might not align with your previous knowledge. When you pause to process the information, you add to your understanding of whatever you heard.
An excellent example of ACRL frame Information Creation as a Process Links to an external site. is recording an oral history. For this assignment, review the video Oral History at Home - Five Easy Steps Links to an external site. and follow the link to their handout Links to an external site..
You will record an oral history. All you need is your phone, a quiet place, and someone to interview. This week I want you to think about who you might want to interview, test recording on your phone, and how to transcribe the interview. You can use apps to help you transcribe the portion you will submit.
You will submit a 5-minute video clip URL (web address) uploaded to the web and a transcript. Suggestions for uploading are YouTube, Facebook, or TikTok (now up to 10 minutes
Links to an external site.). YouTube allows you to upload your transcript and creates an accessible closed-captioned video.
You will write a short reflection of how this project fits with Information Creation as a Process Information Literacy frame. (3-5 sentences or 100 - 200 words.)
We will review this assignment next week. If you have any questions, try to use pronto. I suggest posting any questions into the class Pronto. Other students may have a similar question or can offer advice. If you have any questions, please let me know. I haven't taught with this type of assignment where you work with media files, so if there are bumps, let me know. Remember to come to Office Hours Wednesdays between 5 pm - 6 pm.
