Start Here:

You spent a lot of time this semester thinking about the dangers of social media, fake news, algorithms, disinformation, mal-information, and, well, you get the idea.  This treasure hunt celebrates some of the excellent resources (and diversions) that exist on the internet.  I hope it provides a break from your final projects.

Follow the instructions below, and answer each of the questions. This should not take long, and it's a grade booster. (This will be the easiest 30 points you earn this semester.)

  1. The Internet Archive Links to an external site. contains free books, television shows, movies, music, concerts, collections, software, and more. It's a free digital library where you may be able to find your English classes books instead of purchasing them.  You'll find so much here that isn't available anywhere else on the internet: live concerts, electric sheep (trippy!), and so much more. Use the search function  -- or the Advanced Search function -- to find digital artifacts that you find meaningful. Explore the site and find 3 artifacts that you mind meaningful. List those sources here. Like archives? Check out what we have at GCC here Links to an external site..

See also: Project Gutenberg Links to an external site. to access free eBooks.

  2. On the same site, you will find The Wayback Machine, a resource that has taken images of websites over time. Want to know what GCC's website looked like in 2002? What the New York Times homepage looked like on September 12, 2001? Or on the day you were born? Let your imagination run wild. Just enter the URL you'd like to see in the prescribed field. Take a screenshot of the old website you found. In one sentence. Why did you pick this?

  3. Did you know that COVID-19 has been blamed on the roll-out of 5G mobile phone networks or that the Illuminati apparently started the French Revolution? Find a wacky conspiracy theory you never knew about on this Wikipedia page. Links to an external site. Write a one sentence summary of what you learned about this crazy conspiracy.

  4. The Onion Links to an external site. is a famous fake news source that publishes intentionally fake (and funny) news stories. Pick a story and share the title here.

  5. Find and download a font here Links to an external site. that expresses who you are as a person. When you find a custom font that you like, click on it and use the "Custom preview" field to write a sentence explaining why this font appeals to you. This will let you use that font to write a sentence. Copy and paste that in your response -- or take a screenshot of a sentence you wrote with this font and paste it here.

  6. Look at the Zoom Quilt. Links to an external site. How long did you stare at the screen?

  7. How many tons of CO2 emissions Links to an external site. did the internet produce so far today?

  8. Pick a radio station in France here Links to an external site.. Which station did you pick and what's playing?

  9. Which library closest to you has a Japanese edition of Fortunately by Remy Charlip? Use WorldCat Links to an external site. to find out! Just search for this book title and limit the language to Japanese. It will list all the library -- by proximity -- that carry the title you're seeking. List the library here. Reminder, you can request an Interlibrary Loan Links to an external site. through the GCC library.
  10. Track the voyages of radio-tagged sharks, seals, and sea turtles using Ocearch Links to an external site.. What was the name, species, and date of their last ping? Write one sentence about what you found most interesting about your animal?
