Tutorial Part 1: Searching for a Topic

Searching for a Topic

Let's Begin!

    1. Go to the GCC Library homepage http://glendale.edu/library Links to an external site. and find the OneSearch box.
    2. Type the words "science fiction" in the search box, and click search.
    3. You will see a results list that contains books, articles, and more.  At the top of the list, you will see the number of results you got from this search. How many results did you get? Does it match the number of results that show in the search screen below?

Basic search for "science fiction" with 680,000 results (journal articles and books)

Your number may be different from the example shown above! OneSearch is a dynamic tool that changes daily as content is added and removed from the Library's collection.  That said, the number of results you retrieve should be within about 10,000 of the example above, so if your results are drastically different, check to see if you are doing everything right:

  • Are you in OneSearch Links to an external site.?
  • Are you using the same search terms as in the example? science fiction
  • Are you performing the same type of search? anywhere in the record
